Redevelopment of Taupō Airport 2022

Taupō Airport’s new terminal was designed and built entirely by Taupō locals and was officially opened in March 2023. It is uniquely Taupō, gives visitors a stunning first impression of our district and a lasting memory as they depart, and is complemented with an upgraded carpark. The mauri stone that stands by the arrival gate was sourced from Mount Tauhara, which can be seen to the north-east of the terminal through the floor to ceiling windows. The large wall images are the work of local photographer Jeremy Bright and were chosen in cooperation with local iwi.

Like the interior, the new terminal’s exterior design is unique and distinctive. The work of Taupō’s Shelter Architects, the design won the 2023 Waikato and Bay of Plenty award for Commercial Architecture, which praised the building’s raking eaves and efficient, functional layout and interior design elements that gave it a sense of place.

The new airport terminal is three times larger than the previous terminal (shown with the brown roof to the right of the new terminal). It is much better suited to serve both as a growing transport hub and the heart of the airport precinct, which is home to recreational flying, sky diving, aviation engineering and search and rescue facilities.

In parallel with the construction of the new airport terminal, the existing carpark was extensively upgraded, including a new seal to replace the previous grass surface, lighting and better integration to the terminal. The new carpark is now charged via a number plate recognition system, and the overall upgrade has greatly improved safety and security.

Two pieces of a centuries-old rimu tree stand as centrepieces in the terminal. The rimu had fallen in Pureroa Forest, to the northwest of Taupō, and were salvaged with the support of Te Kotahitanga o Ngāti Tūwharetoa and restored by master carver Delani Brown. Together with the mauri stone and imagery, they help to make the terminal unique and a warm and welcoming space.

On the western wall of the terminal is a large-scale work by New Zealand artist Barry Brickell, which tells the story of the volcanic plateau’s geology. It was saved from destruction by Chris Johnston before being restored in partnership with Taupō District Council and finding its new home in the airport terminal.
